Results Summary of the 2003 National Survey of Paid Time Off Program Practices
Ramsey, NJ (October 23, 2003) – Paid time off (PTO) has become a hot button for Human Resources executives across America. PTO programs can be an organization’s saving grace against unscheduled absences and attendance policy administration nightmares. But PTO is not without its pitfalls.
A cross-section of subscribers to Alexander Hamilton Institute’s Human Resources publications were surveyed to gather facts and opinions from those who had first-hand experiences with implementing PTO programs. The results of the 18-question survey reveal facts about their actual PTO programs, including the benefits attained through the strategy and the practical problems that may have resulted.
The actual questions and response percentages can be found in the results section of the report. But some behind-the-numbers implications include:
- While simplification of record-keeping is a major impetus for implementing PTO in the first place, it also ranks #1 on the list of implementation problems, with almost 45% of the respondents fingering it as the biggest culprit.
- Approximately 72% of the respondents claimed their expectations for their PTO programs had been met, along with the 10% who said those expectations had been exceeded.
- Interestingly, PTO by itself is not seen as the cure-all for the major problem of absenteeism. More strategies would seem needed by 58% of the respondents who indicated that their PTO program had not reduced absenteeism at their firms.
